It’s an abstract sonic category that ranges from subtle textures that underscore the mindset of a character to big bold trailer hits, shimmers, and whooshes that amp up the intensity.

Synthesized tones, granular textures, and atmospheric sounds are all common in this type of design. People often confuse sounds in this category as being part of the score. This is actually a good thing, as it means the sound design and music are seamlessly integrated.
