We mixed the original trailer for The Cuphead Show, which now has more than 10 million views on YouTube. Cuphead is inspired by the golden age of American animation, however, we also wanted to nod to the fact that this is a modern take on a classic theme. As a result, our mix has a higher fidelity, a fuller frequency and a greater dynamic range than of those original cartoons from the ‘30s and ‘40s. 

The sequence begins with twinkling fairytale music that is suddenly undercut by a huge splat as paint is slapped onto a fence. What follows is a minute and a half of utter chaos, packed with boings, buzzes and blams. This is all driven by big cymbal crashes and plenty of oomph from the brass section of the band. We end with a final cymbal splash that punctuates the last one-liner – delivered by the devil himself. Our job here was to balance all these elements within our mix, delivering a final result that harnesses the chaos while still being coherent.
